As one of the last and most skilled manunuyam among the Agusan Manobo, Bae Abina channels her heritage into Suyam, the intricate embroidery tradition of her people. Chosen by the spirit of Tuma, she was granted the blessing to become a matugo—a master of traditional tools and indigenous knowledge—allowing her to craft exquisite works characterized by austere patterns and deep symbolic meanings. Her embroidery showcases Agusan Manobo iconography, drawing inspiration from the region’s flora and fauna, and is proudly worn by esteemed members of her community.
To her people, Abina represents both tradition and identity, serving as a beacon of cultural pride. Her artistry has inspired countless traditional craftsmen, and her work remains a vital pillar of the Agusan Manobo heritage, embodying the very soul of her community.
