From a young age, Hadja Sakinur-ain has mastered the art of Igal, a traditional Sama dance akin to the Pangalay of the Tausug and the Pamansak and Gandingan of the Yakan. She describes Igal as a dance that unites the dancer’s soul and spirit, guided by the rhythmic beats of the traditional tagunggu music.
Recognized by her community as Danda Pandey Ngigal (Igal expert), Hadja Sakinur-ain honed her skills under the guidance of her mother, who taught her movements inspired by the ocean, fish, and birds. She is celebrated for her dedication to preserving and sharing Igal, emphasizing the importance of harmony between the dancer and the dance.
Hadja Sakinur-ain continues to perform Igal with unwavering passion, honoring her ancestors (omboh), her family, her Sama community, and her students. Through her tireless efforts, she ensures that the art of Igal endures, inspiring future generations of dancers to carry on this cherished tradition.
